We are sure the Y4PT Foundation experience will encourage more individuals and istitutions to take risks and give life and sustainability to big ideas.

Imagine…a global network of young people working together for positive changes and sustainable development around the world.. such a network exist and his name is Y4PT…!

Youth For Public Transport Foundation is now a passionate international non-governmental Youth Organisation (NGO) that promotes the active participation of young people in advocating sustainable mobility by promoting the integrated use of public transport with the other means of transport in order to seek a greater welfare and a better quality of life of all people around the world.

Our story started in Germany in Karlsruhe, in 2007, where a visionary group of the International Association of Public Transportation (UITP), decided to start involving young people to talk about their perceptions of Public Transport and bring a fresh perspective on the world of Transport, so often considered old: they were thinking, there must be a better way to bring a new attitude, a new concept, to anyone in the world!

After the success of Karlsruhe, the process was replicated in other countries, and after each meeting, more and more young people were involved in finding solutions for current societal challenges and in promoting a better transportation system that provides a positive mobility experience and accessibility to all citizens.

Within 2 years Y4PT reached Latin America, Asia and Africa students and professionals, hundred of them!

We became The Y4PT Young Ambassadors , spread all over the world, working together because we think and we believe, that no boundaries and no limits should exist in promoting sustainable development to communities worldwide.

Amazing talents can be find anywhere! May be the next Albert Einstein or the next Steve Jobs is living in a remote village in Africa and he/she would be able to come with the next big idea and make the world a better place.

Educated, employed and engaged young people should be all over to use their power to solve the world’s toughest problems.

We listen to good ideas…we help them to grow…we invest our time …to change the face of the world!

Is a really exciting time: we are proud to have generated a new model, we are gathering a world of interactions per countries, per students , per classes , per young professionals!

We believe in bottom up processes to take place, connecting and committing everyone to invert the pyramid:

One of Y4PT‘s main goals is to promote the active participation of young people in solving transport and mobility issues at all levels and in all scenarios since youth is currently a major category of public transport users and they are inheritors of all outcomes derived from all decisions taken today.

Every young person deserves the opportunity to realize his/her full potential, and, at Y4PT, we understand that is not just a matter of asking them to participate in our adventure, or giving them a platform to express themselves, but is the ability to keep them together for years, founding common interests and deep links between each others, to grow together and feel as a whole being!!

Alessandra Gorini – Thiago Tavares

Sustainable mobility definition:

Allows the basic access and development needs of individuals, companies and society to be met safely and in a manner consistent with human and ecosystem health, and promotes equity within and between successive generations.

Is Affordable, operates fairly and efficiently, offers a choice of transport mode, and supports a competitive economy, as well as balanced regional development.

Limits emissions and waste within the planet’s ability to absorb them, uses renewable resources at or below their rates of generation, and uses non-renewable resources at or below the rates of development of renewable substitutes, while minimizing the impact on the use of land and the generation of noise.

Sohar is a prominent, pleasant and calm city in the Sultanate of Oman, it has emerged as Oman’s industrial hub due to the massive developments in the Sohar industrial port and the nearby areas.

Sohar University is the first private university in Oman, and provides high-quality education to residents of Oman and international students in the faculties of Business, Computing and Information technology, Engineering , Arts and Law and Faculty of English Studies.

The 2nd UITP AND Y4PT YOUTH SEMINAR for the MENA Region has seen the light to help the Youth in shaping their attitude, perception and behaviour about Public Transport.

Congestion on the roads and accidents are the main threats plaguing the Omani Society and demand a real concrete intervention. Provision of good Public Transport is one of the solutions that Governments, Associations, Citizen action groups, and Academic researcher around the globe are recommending to contain such threats!

As more and more PT projects are emerging in the MENA region it is very critical for the Youth to be involved not only as user but also as work forces that power these projects.

So, we are definitely more than happy to have more Omani young people on board with us, after a first wonderful edition that saw many representatives of Y4PT Oman coming to Dubai for our Biannual Meeting in 2011!

The second Youth Parliament in Sohar, believes and promotes the development of a real Public Transport in Oman to build up a great sustainable future. A greater mobility in the region and the awareness on Public Transport will sure rise through the promotion of a better education, one of the steps the Y4PT Sohar is willing to promote!

Y4PT Sohar representatives of both edition, (2011 and 2013) will be in Geneva with us, participating at the First International Y4PT Youth Days on Public Transport , to share their ideas and events and keep everyone updated on their future activities in the Oman Sultanate.

They will present videos and campaigns with their wonderful smiles and positive thinking, showing how , from scratch, is possible to believe in changes and perceptions!

The objective has been the one of reinforcing the loyalty of today’s youth, to make them “perennial” users of public transport; and to highlight the benefits they can derive from regular use of public transport instead of the “car reflex”; especially the urban youth who benefits from a range of travel solutions close to home.

A dynamic Campaign that relies on the value of freedom, autonomy, to show the new generations all the things that a Public Transport way of moving around allow them to live.

This new signature campaign : “which other mode of transport allows you to do so?” , values the freedom to move as well the optimization of the precious time the Youth can leverage for their personal, social or cultural life.

We want to thank InnoZ’s Mr. Marc Schelewsky and Mr. Benno Bock for the invitation and for giving us the opportunity to share the important work we do for many years now.
Does the private car loose its importance for the younger generations? Are young people more pragmatic in the use and combination of various transport modes (car sharing, public transport, cycling, etc.)?What impact do smart phones and mobile internet have on mobility of young people?

The 18th Mobilitätssalon at InnoZ in Berlin was searching for answers for these important questions that will for sure effect the transportation sectors future directions in many ways. The development of technology, the rise of new business models and services, and of course education of children in transport and traffic will face a shift in paradigm.

As a professional forum, this 18th Mobilitätssalon presented a multi-disciplinary panel with experts from science, education, the industry and NGO’s. Four expert presentations were given: Dr. Klaus Dibbern of flinc (2nd from left), Christian Uhland of HVV (5th from left), Inga Deibel (4th from left) and Robert Schönduw (6th from left) of InnoZ and myself, Kubilay Altun Y4PT Germany (3rd from left).

Dear friends,

the first UK Y4PT workshop has been an absolute success with a wonderful atmosphere!

Topics such as security, customer service and attractiveness were one of the most discussed categories during the workshop session.

We have found that measures such as a ‘help-button’ on London buses, especially at night time, but also being implemented on bus stops would tremendously increase the security of London’s buses and users.

All participants shared experiences of people being beaten-up or dangerous moments about health of drunk individuals, where probably a simple ‘help-button’ connected to the 999 emergency number could be the key to ambulance assistance and security (similar to those already in place on TFL underground platforms). Furthermore, we have also agreed that lighting on bus stops and tube entrances mainly on suburban neighborhoods (beyond zone 1) does play a vital role for the security of passengers and by-passers.

Another essential topic throughout our discussion was ‘customer service’. We concluded that there is a lot of potential for TFL to train their staff at the stations and ticket offices to be much more customer oriented. Friendliness is essential to engage with people and users successfully, even public transport sector. It has also been pointed out that a mystery agent employed by TFL should assess TFL staff on the stations and ticket offices in order to gain feedback of their customer service ability and performance. This would help team leaders and line managers to train their staff more effectively on customer service.

Another interested topic was ‘attractiveness’. We all love the image and the brand of London Underground, for example the red of the double-decker buses, the iconic underground map design and the famous nickname ‘tube’. But sometimes we do miss a little bit of excitement while using the service on a daily basis. Other cities such as Vienna, Warsaw or New York do have other features to entertain their customers. These can be big screens with news feeds or even music or radio with news feeds while interchanging between stations.

In addition, we also found that it would be great to have screens or maps on London buses that indicate the entire route of each bus line (not only the next bus stop). Tourists and passengers who are unfamiliar with the bus route they are using would highly appreciate if they can instantly see the entire course of each bus line.

In conclusion, we all agreed that public transport should be obviously in London less expensive and ticketing and fares have to be more flexible (Monday-to-Friday ticket, 24/48 and 72hrs zone ticket, etc.). As a result, we truly hope that the recent public discussion in newspapers about implementing a smart ticketing system for railways will change transportation for London and the UK in the near future.

We ended the workshop with a tricky but interesting transport quiz, which you, and other Y4PT fans liked so much!

Stay tuned to know more in the future about London activities and in the meanwhile, I’m glad to present you Areena David, one of our new Y4PT representtives, London!

Here some words from her side:

” With the experience of working in various frontline roles within the airline and retail

industry, now working with the team of Regeneration and Development, in Housing and Adult

Social Care division of the Council , while studying Urban Planning, Design and Management at UCL, I feel I can make the difference when working with the public.

In fact my deep feeling is to continue to get involved in bringing people together and initiate new projects for a sustainable world , better public transport systems and facilities throughout the world.

I’m passionate in thinking how I could help implementing any new ideas we all could develop together! If you read these lines, and are from the UK, get in touch with us, we are developing a new concrete adventure!! “
